Traditional use

Passiflora incarnata, purple passionflower or maypop, is a vine native to North America. According to the USDA, the Houma, the Cherokee and other Native American peoples used it for food, drink and medicine; in 1612 Captain Smith reported that Native Americans in Virginia planted it for its fruit. The Cherokee name of the vine, uwa’ga, survives in Ocoee (Uwagâ’hi, “apricot place”), a former settlement on the Ocoee River in Tennessee (Mooney 1900).

In Europe its aerial parts are described in the European Pharmacopoeia and featured in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia (1976); in 2014 the European Medicines Agency (HMPC committee) adopted a traditional herbal medicinal product monograph on them. That framework concerns authorised medicines, not collector’s items. The aerial parts contain mainly C-glycosyl flavonoids (orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, isovitexin, schaftoside, isoschaftoside).

Known compoundsSix main C-glycosyl flavonoids (orientin, isoorientin, schaftoside, isoschaftoside, vitexin, isovitexin), up to about 2.5% of the dried plant.

About Passiflora incarnata

Linnaeus named Passiflora incarnata in Species Plantarum in 1753, and GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants still accept that name in the Passifloraceae. The species is native to Bermuda and to the south-eastern and central United States, from Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas east to Florida, the Carolinas, Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The checklist records it as introduced in Italy, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam and New Caledonia. Besides purple passionflower, GBIF lists the English names maypop and apricot-vine.

Cut herb or extract

The same species is also sold dried: the finely cut Passiflora incarnata herb is plant material, while this bottle holds a liquid. The ashwagandha extract belongs to the same Maya series, with an identical 10 ml bottle, a green label and the same declared alcohol content. You will find the full range of liquid extracts under Extracts.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
