Reported effects and traditional use
Nymphaea caerulea, the blue lotus or blue Egyptian water lily, is a water lily whose accepted name is Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea. It appears on Egyptian papyri and tombs from the 14th century BCE. In 2024 an analysis of a Ptolemaic ritual vase of the 2nd century BCE found traces of the plant, with others, in a liquid used for ritual practices (Tanasi et al. 2024).
The effects reported for blue lotus are a mild relaxation, sometimes euphoria, but also agitation or confusion in some users. They rest on anecdotal accounts and a case series, with no controlled human trial.
| Known compounds | Flavonoids and anthocyanins; aporphine-type alkaloids (nuciferine, apomorphine) are cited, but an authentic extract analysed in 2023 held only traces of nuciferine and no apomorphine. |

| Reported effects | Mild relaxation, euphoria in some; agitation, confusion or derealisation reported in clinical cases. Level of evidence: anecdotal accounts and case series, no controlled trial. |
| Traditional use | Ancient Egypt: funerary and ritual iconography (papyri, tombs, vases); a relaxing reputation in traditional medicine according to a 2023 review. |
| State of research | Little data, mostly analytical, and no published safety data on the whole plant. No health claim is authorised in the EU for blue lotus. |
Good to know
- Emergency services have described states of agitation, confusion or psychotic symptoms after blue lotus products (a case series of five patients; a 2026 review).
- The UK authority OPSS noted the lack of information on content, its variability and the purity of these products.
What the photos show
The upright kraft pouch carries a green label: Maya Herbs, "Blue Lotus", "Nymphaea caerulea", "Whole" and a "Made in Thailand" seal; the "Net Weight" field is blank in the image. Beside it, a woven basket holds dried blue-violet flowers with yellow-orange centres. Two close-ups show the crumpled petals and the fine stamens of whole flowers. The last image is a photo of a living flower on the water between floating leaves; it is not the product.
A water lily with a lotus name
The name Nymphaea caerulea was published by Jules-César Savigny in 1798. The WCVP, the World Checklist of Vascular Plants of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, now lists it as a synonym of Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea (Savigny) Verdc.; the label keeps the older name, which is why both appear on this page. The plant belongs to the water lily family, Nymphaeaceae; the lotus of the genus Nelumbo is a different plant.
Origin: the label and the WCVP
The Made in Thailand seal names the country where the product was made. According to the WCVP, the native range of this variety runs from Egypt to southern Africa and includes the south of the Arabian Peninsula and the Comoros; it is listed as introduced in, among other places, Brazil, Queensland, Mauritius and Fiji. In the WCVP data relayed by GBIF, Thailand appears neither in the native range nor among the countries of introduction, so the identification of the species rests on the name printed on the label.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
- Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
- The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
