Bálsamo de Oro, a chilcuague oil in 60 ml

Bálsamo de Oro, Spanish for “golden balm”, is the name on the label of this chilcuague oil. The supplier lists it as a chilcuague massage oil from Mexico, with Heliopsis longipes as the plant, a liquid form and a volume of 60 ml, packed in a spray bottle. Mycotrop carries it as the only oil among its chilcuague products, next to the sprays, the lip balm and the dried root.

Reported effects and traditional use

Heliopsis longipes, chilcuague (also chilcuán, pelitre or “golden root”), is a perennial composite endemic to the Sierra de Álvarez and the Sierra Gorda in Mexico, where the states of San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato and Querétaro meet. Only the root is used.

According to a 2008 ethnobotanical survey in nine traditional markets, the most frequent use is as a condiment in sauces, dishes and alcoholic drinks. It is valued for its pungent flavour and for the numbing sensation it causes in the mouth, which leads to it being paired with chilli. The root is harvested from the wild and pulled up with the plant; the collectors interviewed observe that the species has become scarcer.

Known compoundsAlkamides, including affinin (a C10 alkamide), accumulated in the root but not in the leaves (Buitimea-Cantúa et al. 2020).
Reported effectsPungent flavour and a numbing sensation in the mouth, described by buyers interviewed in Mexican markets (Cilia-López et al. 2008).
Traditional useCondiment in sauces, dishes and alcoholic drinks in central Mexico; root sold all year in regional markets; other folk uses recorded.
State of researchLaboratory chemical and pharmacological studies of the root. No health claim is authorised in the EU.

Bottle and label

The oil is filled into an amber bottle with a white spray cap. The front label, in white, gold and brown, shows two stylised hands in red and orange inside a golden wreath. A gold ribbon carries the name Bálsamo de Oro, with the word bifásico underneath, and the net content of 60 ml is printed at the bottom. The supplier publishes no ingredient list, so the oil base is not named here.

About Heliopsis longipes

Heliopsis longipes (A.Gray) S.F.Blake is accepted by GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants as a member of the daisy family, Asteraceae. Its native range is recorded as north-eastern Mexico, and chilcuán appears in GBIF as a Spanish common name.

Other chilcuague products

The solid format in the range is the 5 g chilcuague lip balm with beeswax. A bottle of the same size, but holding a liquid extract instead of an oil, is the 60 ml chilcuague extract spray.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
