Traditional use

Epimedium brevicornu is one of the barrenwort species known in China as yin yang huo, called “horny goat weed” in English. The genus Epimedium has about fifty species in the barberry family. A 2016 review reports that Epimedium species have been used in herbal preparations for more than 2,000 years.

More than 260 compounds have been isolated from the genus, mainly prenylated flavonoids. Icariin and its derivatives, such as icaritin and icariside II, are the most studied (Tan et al. 2016).

Known compoundsPrenylated flavonoids, markers of the genus: icariin, icaritin, icariside II, epimedins A, B and C (Ma et al. 2011; Tan et al. 2016).

Name and spelling

Maximowicz described Epimedium brevicornu in 1889. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it in the barberry family, Berberidaceae, with Epimedium rotundatum K.S.Hao as a synonym. The label spells the epithet brevicornum, a form that botanical databases do not accept; this page uses the accepted spelling. The Chinese name recorded for the species is yin yang huo, while the genus is known in English as barrenwort or epimedium.

Native range

Kew’s checklist gives the native range as north-central, south-central and south-eastern China, together with Qinghai. China, the country on the label, is therefore within the plant’s natural area.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
