Two plants in one bottle: the Maya cacao and blue lotus extract

This extract combines cacao, Theobroma cacao, and blue lotus, Nymphaea caerulea, in a 10 ml dark glass bottle with a dropper cap. The brown label carries the name Maya and the words “full spectrum”, and lists Theobroma cacao, Nymphaea caerulea and alcohol 20% as ingredients. The supplier, Maya World Trading BV in Haarlem, sells it as “Cacao & Blue Lotus Elixir”, lists the product form as a tincture and names fruit and flower as the plant parts. It gives no extract ratio and no country of origin. At Mycotrop, it sits between the single-plant cacao extract and the blue lotus products.

Reported effects and traditional use

This product combines cacao (Theobroma cacao) and blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea). Archaeological residues attest to the use of cacao in South America about 5,000 years ago, and several Mesoamerican civilisations used it ritually. The blue lotus is a water lily depicted on Egyptian papyri and tombs from the 14th century BCE.

For blue lotus, the literature describes a mild relaxation and, in some users, euphoria; it also reports agitation and confusion. These effects rest on anecdotal accounts and one case series, with no controlled human trial.

Known compoundsCacao: theobromine, caffeine. Blue lotus: flavonoids; aporphine-type alkaloids (nuciferine, apomorphine) are cited, but an authentic extract analysed in 2023 held only traces of nuciferine and no apomorphine.
Reported effectsBlue lotus: mild relaxation, euphoria in some; agitation, confusion or derealisation reported in clinical cases. Level of evidence: anecdotal accounts and case series.
Traditional useCacao: ritual drink of the Maya and Aztecs. Blue lotus: funerary and ritual iconography of ancient Egypt.
State of researchCacao: composition well known. Blue lotus: little data, mostly analytical, and no published safety data on the whole plant. No health claim is authorised in the EU for blue lotus.

Good to know

  • A case series of five people described agitation, confusion, derealisation and anxiety after blue lotus products; psychotic presentations have also been reported (2026 review).
  • The UK authority OPSS noted the lack of information on content, its variability and the purity of these products.

The two plants and their botanical names

GBIF accepts Theobroma cacao L. and places it in the mallow family, Malvaceae. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) gives its native range as northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, northern Brazil and the Guianas) and Costa Rica. Blue lotus is a water lily (Nymphaeaceae). GBIF lists the name on the label, Nymphaea caerulea, as a synonym of Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea, a plant native to much of Africa.

Related products

The Maya cacao extract comes in the same 10 ml bottle and lists only Theobroma cacao and alcohol 20%. Blue lotus on its own is available as a 50:1 resin extract and as a 15:1 flower tincture. Cacao and blue lotus are also combined in the Colombian cacao with blue lotus, a ceremonial cacao blend.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Since when has cacao been used in ceremony?

Archaeological residues indicate the use of cacao in South America about 5,000 years ago (Lanaud et al. 2024). Mesoamerican civilisations used it ritually and medicinally, according to colonial sources (Dillinger et al. 2000).

What is in the bottle?

10 ml of liquid extract. The label lists Theobroma cacao, Nymphaea caerulea and alcohol 20%.
