Important: seeds that contain LSA

Good to know

These seeds contain ergot alkaloids, including ergine (LSA). Nausea and vomiting are common, and these alkaloids constrict the blood vessels.

  • Never during pregnancy: ergot alkaloids can cause contractions of the uterus.
  • Not suitable for people with cardiovascular disease, circulation problems or liver problems, and never with MAOIs or migraine medicines (triptans, ergot derivatives).
  • We do not give any preparation method or dosage for these seeds.

Traditional use and composition

Ipomoea tricolor is a morning glory native to Mexico and widely grown as an ornamental. Shortly after the conquest of Mexico, Spanish chroniclers mentioned tlitliltzin, a black, angular seed, among the divinatory plants of Aztec religion. Schultes reports that the species, then called Ipomoea violacea, was identified in the twentieth century in ceremonial use among the Zapotecs of Oaxaca.

The seeds contain ergot alkaloids, including ergine (LSA). They are produced by a symbiotic fungus of the genus Periglandula, described in 2025 as Periglandula clandestina.

Known compoundsErgot alkaloids, including ergine (LSA), found throughout the plant. They come from a symbiotic fungus, Periglandula clandestina, isolated in 2025 (Hazel et al.).
Traditional useThe Aztec tlitliltzin, identified with this species, is described by chroniclers as a divinatory plant. Ceremonial use among the Zapotecs of Oaxaca was reported in the twentieth century (Schultes 1976).
State of researchMostly botanical and chemical work; few human data on LSA (2025 systematic review). No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

A Mexican species, described by Cavanilles

Cavanilles described Ipomoea tricolor in 1795 in the third volume of his Icones. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts the name in Convolvulaceae, the bindweed family, and lists synonyms such as Ipomoea rubrocaerulea Hook. and Pharbitis tricolor (Cav.) Chitt.

Native in Mexico, introduced in Romania

According to the checklist the species is native only to Mexico, from the north-east to the south-west of the country. It is recorded as introduced in many other regions, among them the south-eastern United States, parts of South America, Africa and Asia, and in Europe Germany and Romania. The Romanian origin on the label is therefore the source of the seeds, not part of the natural range.

One common name, two plants

GBIF records Mexican morning glory as an English name of Ipomoea tricolor and dwarf morning glory as one of Convolvulus tricolor, a different species with the same epithet, tricolor. The Latin name on the label is the reliable reference.

Shipping and returns

Orders are packed on business days and sent in plain outer packaging that gives no indication of the contents. If the carrier provides tracking, we email you the link once the parcel is on its way. Delivery estimates and the 14-day right of withdrawal, with its exceptions, are explained on Delivery, Tracking & Returns.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
