Reported effects and traditional use

Lavandula angustifolia, true lavender, is an aromatic plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae) native to the Mediterranean region (France, Spain, Andorra, Italy). Its name comes from the Latin lavare, ‘to wash’, according to the NCCIH.

The EMA assessment report cites Hildegard of Bingen, Matthiolus and Paracelsus among the European authors who described lavender water. The flowers contain 1 to 3% essential oil.

Known compoundsFlower: essential oil (1 to 3%), coumarins (umbelliferone, herniarin), flavonoids, tannins and phenolic acids including rosmarinic acid. In the oil: mainly linalool and linalyl acetate.
Reported effectsAssociated with relaxation in the European tradition (EMA).
Traditional useAn aromatic plant of southern Europe, whose distilled water is described by authors such as Hildegard of Bingen, Matthiolus and Paracelsus.
State of researchSmall clinical trials with limited results according to the NCCIH; the effects of aromatherapy remain unclear. No health claim is authorised for lavender in the EU.

Good to know

  • Lavender applied to the skin may cause allergic skin reactions (NCCIH).
  • In cell cultures, lavender oil proved weakly oestrogenic; the relevance of this result to humans is hard to judge (EMA).

Botanical identity

Philip Miller published Lavandula angustifolia in 1768, in the eighth edition of The Gardeners Dictionary. GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants accept the name within the Lamiaceae and recognise two subspecies, angustifolia and pyrenaica. The checklist records the species as native to France, Spain and Italy, and as introduced in many other countries, Germany and Great Britain among them. GBIF gives English lavender and common lavender as its English names.

Pouch and flowers

The kraft stand-up pouch has a violet and green label headed Maya Incense, with Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, Cut Flowers and a Made in France seal; the product name on the pouch is simply Lavender. Beside it, and alone in the second photo, a terracotta bowl holds a heap of small dried buds in grey-blue and violet, mixed with a few green flower parts.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
