Important: a plant that contains DMT
Good to know
This species is known to contain DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) or related tryptamines. Combined with a plant that contains MAOIs, as in ayahuasca, it can cause serious interactions with many medicines and other substances.
- Not suitable for anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, for people with heart disease, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Never with antidepressants or other psychoactive substances.
- We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.
Traditional use and composition
Brosimum acutifolium is an Amazonian tree of the mulberry family (Moraceae), known as mururé. According to a 2019 historical article, its use in the folk medicine of colonial Amazonia is documented from the 18th century, based on a Jesuit work; the effect sought was attributed to its latex.
Recent scientific literature mostly concerns flavonoids isolated from the species and studied in the laboratory. A 2006 study identified bufotenine, a tryptamine, in the latex of the subspecies acutifolium of the Guianas, the latex from which shamans of that region make takini. Little has been published on the bark itself.
| Known compounds | Flavonoids isolated from the species, including brosimine B and the compounds BAS-1, BAS-4 and BAS-6 (Maués et al. 2019; Fonseca et al. 2025); bufotenine in the latex of the subspecies acutifolium (Moretti et al. 2006). |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Amazonian folk medicine, attested from the 18th century, in which the latex was the part regarded as active (Vieira et al. 2019); in the Guianas, latex used by shamans for takini (Moretti et al. 2006). |
| State of research | Mostly laboratory studies on isolated compounds, carried out on cells. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
What the photos show
The cover photo shows a kraft stand-up pouch with a green Maya Herbs label reading Murure, Brosimum acutifolium and Shredded, with a Made in Peru seal. In front of the pouch stands a terracotta bowl heaped with shaggy bark fibres in rust and reddish-brown tones; the second photo shows that bowl on its own. The net-weight field on the label is left blank in the photo.
Botanical identity
Jacques Huber described Brosimum acutifolium in 1910, in the bulletin of the Museu Goeldi in Belém. GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants accept the species in the Moraceae and recognise three subspecies: acutifolium, interjectum and obovatum. The checklist records it as native to Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, the Guianas and northern, north-eastern and central-western Brazil.
Another murure format
A finer alternative is the powdered mururé bark, listed by its supplier with Brazil as the country and sold in the same three sizes.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
