It takes about a year for the seeds to produce roots and start growing, but once mature, the Peruvian torch (Echinopsis peruviana) grows very rapidly, about 10 to 50 centimetres a year.
Trichocereus peruvianus is closely related to the San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi). It resembles the San Pedro in form except for a lighter, bluish colour and longer thorns (7-10 cm).
