Traditional use
Pogostemon cablin, patchouli, is an aromatic member of the mint family native to the Philippines, growing wild in several countries of South and South-East Asia; it is cultivated commercially in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, China and elsewhere. Its leaves yield an essential oil widely used in the fragrance industry (Swamy and Sinniah 2015).
According to the same review, the plant has long belonged to the traditional medicine of India and China, and is also used in Japan and Malaysia. Its oil is dominated by patchouli alcohol (patchoulol).

About the species
Bentham published the combination Pogostemon cablin in 1848, in de Candolle’s Prodromus. Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts it in the mint family, Lamiaceae, with Pogostemon patchouly Pellet.-Saut., Pogostemon hortensis Backer ex K.Heyne and Pogostemon battakianus Ridl. among its synonyms. Patchouli and patchouly are the English names recorded in plant name databases.
Native and introduced range
The checklist lists Sri Lanka, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, Sulawesi, the Philippines and New Guinea as native areas. It records the plant as introduced in places such as Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, south-eastern China, Fiji and Samoa.
