Reishi with lemon balm and lavender, labelled by Foodsporen

This is a 30 ml oral spray from Foodsporen, the maker of the reishi, chaga and lion’s mane extracts stocked by Mycotrop. Three names are printed on the front: Reishi at the top, then the maker’s product name, and under it the line “Lemon balm & Lavender”. The spray is listed here by those label ingredients. It comes in a single size and in an orange box that repeats the design, with texts in Dutch and English.

Reishi, lemon balm and lavender in botanical terms

For reishi, GBIF gives Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P.Karst., the lacquered bracket, an accepted fungus species in the family Polyporaceae. Lemon balm is the usual English name of Melissa officinalis L., described by Linnaeus in 1753 and placed in the mint family, Lamiaceae. Lavender is the common name of the genus Lavandula, which belongs to the same family. The label does not state which lavender species is used, so no species is named here.

Bottle and box

In the product photo the white bottle, closed with a clear plastic overcap, stands beside its box. Both are printed in orange and peach tones with a stylised bracket fungus in rust and purple, the foodsporen logo and the word Reishi. On the box front you can read “Mondspray | Oral spray”, “Citroenmelisse & Lavendel / Lemon balm & Lavender” and “Netto inhoud / Net content 30 ml”. The reishi on its own is available from the same maker as a reishi extract in a 30 ml dropper bottle.

Functional mushrooms: what we know

Reishi, lion’s mane, chaga, cordyceps and maitake have a long history in Asia and Eastern Europe, both in cooking and in traditional medicine. Modern research consists mainly of laboratory and animal studies: no health claims are authorised in the European Union for these mushrooms, and we do not make any.

Precautions

  • Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice if you take any medication, especially an anticoagulant or a diabetes medicine, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Chaga is rich in oxalates: kidney damage has been reported after heavy, prolonged consumption.
  • Stick to the daily dose stated on the label, and keep out of the reach of children.
  • A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet.

Storage

Keep the product tightly closed, dry and away from light; for liquid extracts and tinctures, follow the instructions on the label.
