The Ultimate Guide to Magic Mushrooms or Hallucinogenic Mushrooms

Everything you need to know about shrooms.

Have you ever heard of magic mushrooms, hallucinogens, magic mushrooms, or magic mushroom grow kits? Whatever your answer, you are in the right place since you will find in these lines all the information you have always been looking for to satisfy your curiosity about the subject.

The scientific name of magic mushrooms or hallucinogenic mushrooms is "psilocybin mushrooms". English speakers call them "magic mushrooms" or "shrooms". These plants owe their name to the product they contain, which is none other than psilocybin. The latter turns into psilocin when ingested, and causes a psychedelic state.

There are more than 144 species and varieties in the world. Their use goes back a very long time, when they were used for religious ceremonies. Indeed, since pre-Columbian times, Mesoamerican peoples seem to have used them during religious ceremonies of divination and healing. This is explained by the psychedelic state that these mushrooms cause.

Nowadays, hallucinogenic mushrooms exist in variety and are used to experiment with "trip" or psychedelic state, especially in low doses. Around the world, the use of these mushrooms remains highly debated and difficult to access, but they are considered legal in several countries, especially for personal use. For this, you can use a grow kit (or several kits) to grow your own mushrooms.

What is a magic mushroom ?

You have to ask yourself this question forever. The scientific name of magic mushrooms or hallucinogenic mushrooms is none other than "psilocybin mushrooms". English speakers call them "magic mushrooms" or "shrooms". These plants owe their name to the product they contain, in this case psilocybin, which turns into psilocin when ingested, and which produces all the psychedelic effects sought.

The hallucinogenic mushroom is one of the 100 species (variety) that contains the most psilocybin and psilocybe. There are several organic varieties of these fungi, such as Copelandia, Gymnopilus, Inocybe, Panaelus, Plutus, etc.

Hallucinogenic mushrooms have always been very popular for their psychedelic effects, such as euphoria and hallucinations. It was only during the 60s that they gained popularity with the hippie movement. Since then, many experts have asked questions about their use, dosage, and potential dangers. Some countries have decided to consider them as a controlled substance, and have regulated its sale. Note that hallucinogenic mushrooms are not drugs.

What is a mushroom truffle ?

Think again, we are not talking about chocolate truffles, but a mushroom variant! There is no big difference between mushrooms and magic truffles. Perhaps, some will tell you that this is the taste, since truffles are usually difficult to chew, harder and more bitter.

Even the name of truffles is not very accurate. Truth be told, magic truffles are not real "truffles", but rather what are commonly called sclerotia. Real truffles used in cooking are the fruiting organ of a genus of ascomycete, non-psychoactive mushroom.

Sclerotia or "false truffles" are the fruiting organ of the famous Psilocybe mexicana, and they grow underground when conditions are unfavorable. Their humidity level is very low, hence their resistance to prolonged periods of drought.

Magic truffles are easy to find online, and contain the same active component, which is none other than psilocybin. You can easily get them compared to magic mushrooms that usually have to be grown yourself using grow kits. Be careful, the use of kit is not difficult but consumes more time.

You can enjoy your magic truffles in the same way as mushrooms: in a tea, in chocolate "truffles" after having ground them well, in cakes, etc.

What does a magic mushroom look like?

The similarity between poisonous mushroom and hallucinogenic mushroom

Many poisonous mushrooms look similar to hallucinogenic or magic mushrooms, which is why it is important to know their characteristics. It would still be better not to pick them yourself and buy them from professionals, accustomed to growing and picking them. Note that the consumption of a poisonous mushroom can cause a lot of harmful or even fatal effects.

Marketed hallucinogenic mushrooms

In some markets, hallucinogenic mushrooms can be found sold raw or dried. It is important to note that some types of hallucinogenic mushrooms are more potent than others.

What taste and smell do magic mushrooms like?

Generally, some types of hallucinogenic mushrooms are consumed raw. Liberty caps, for example, are. They have a very strong taste and a texture that is difficult to chew, like rubber.

You should keep in mind that the consumption of magic mushrooms has nothing to do with that of normal and edible mushrooms, and that you will have to find a way to make them easier to eat. For this reason, many prefer to add them to a cake, omelette or tea. There are several tricks to make consumption more enjoyable and easier.

Why consume a hallucinogenic mushroom?

Most people use magic mushrooms for one of two reasons:

Pleasure

The use of psilocybin in low doses provides a pleasant feeling of relaxation and euphoria.

Inspiration

Many users of hallucinogenic mushrooms take them to help them with their creative activities or for problem solving. The condition caused by psilocybin or psilocybe allows you to be more stimulated and full of positive energy. To arrive at this described state, you will still need to properly dose your consumption of hallucinogenic mushrooms to successfully keep control.

A spiritual ritual

Some consider the state stimulated by hallucinogenic mushrooms as the key to the doors of perception and the afterlife, which is why the doses used in such rituals are generally higher.

How to consume a hallucinogenic mushroom?

No matter why you want to take hallucinogenic mushrooms, you should keep in mind that they can be harmful if you take a large amount of them all at once. For this, you can use dosage calculators available on our website.

Also, given their effect, you must be careful not to take them before work, driving under the influence of a narcotic or any intense intellectual effort. It would be best if you stayed in a safe and comfortable place, especially if you are consuming them for the first time.

Hallucinogenic mushrooms come in many forms and allow you to consume them in different ways.

The classic method of eating mushrooms: chewing and swallowing them

Although this method can be quite unpleasant, some prefer simplicity. It is advisable to chew the hallucinogenic mushroom (magic mushrooms) well to allow the juice containing psilocybin to come out and mix with your saliva. After 45 minutes, the psychoactive substance (psilocybin or psilocybe, converted into psilocin) arrives in your general circulation to reach every cell in your body and produce the desired effect. Note that the less you eat before, the better, so that the digestion process is fast and efficient. It is therefore advisable to avoid eating for a few hours.

You can grind your mushrooms into paste form to avoid the chewing part, which is generally considered unpleasant.

Consume your hallucinogenic mushroom with tea

What if you took your hallucinogenic mushrooms in infusion form? What a wonderful idea! To do this, you just need to heat water, and cut the desired amount of magic mushrooms into small pieces, then put them in them. Slowly mix the contents of your pan. Be careful, do not let the water heat until it boils, because psilocybin degrades at high temperatures. Let your drink rest for 10 to 15 minutes, then enjoy your tea and your moment of pleasure!

Take your hallucinogenic mushrooms in capsule or capsule form

The consumption of capsules or capsules of hallucinogenic mushrooms is a smart way to dose your psilocybin consumption and regulate it so as not to fall into the extreme. Indeed, by taking capsules or capsules, you can experience the magical ultimate clarity (or a spiritual trip) while maintaining control over your day. If you know how to do it, you could even make your own capsules.

Mix your magic mushrooms with food

This is another smart way to consume magic mushrooms! By adding your magic mushrooms to your favorite dishes, you open up the possibility of experiencing a psychedelic trip while exercising your culinary skills and satisfying your taste buds. Thus, you can camouflage the taste of mushrooms and remove the nausea sensation that arises from them.

You can incorporate your magic mushrooms into the dish or dessert of your choice. Your only limits will be your imagination and cooking temperature. You must then keep in mind that psilocybin (or psilocybe), a psychoactive substance that causes psychedelic trip, is degradable by excessive temperature. In this case, if you put your mushrooms in a pizza for example, you may have a lower quality trip experience. We advise you to put your magic mushrooms in sauces or toppings after cooking, such as a freshly prepared pesto. You can even prepare delicious treats like chocolate truffles.

The more magic mushrooms you consume, the more you will find the dosage that suits you to achieve the desired trip and recipes that make your consumption more enjoyable and pleasant.

History of magic mushrooms

Formerly

Some rock art dating back to pre-history hypothesizes that psilocybe hispanica was used in religious rituals. Indeed, since pre-Columbian times, some hallucinogenic species (variety) seem to have been used by Mesoamerican peoples during religious ceremonies of divination and healing. In Guatemala, there are stones and patterns in the form of mushrooms.

Even more surprising, an ancient statuette representing a Psilocybe mexicana was discovered in the state of Colima, Mexico. A teōnanācatl (literally divine mushroom), a species of magic mushroom, was served at the coronation of an Aztec ruler. Thus, the Aztec peoples gave them several names, such as genius mushrooms, divinatory mushrooms, and wonderful mushrooms.

After the Spanish conquest, a campaign to fight against the cultural tradition of the Aztecs was conducted, and the use of plants (and hallucinogenic mushrooms among others) was suppressed. Magic mushrooms were even considered a means of communication with demons. However, some remote areas have managed to preserve their traditions.

Modern era

In 1799, the first mention of hallucinogenic mushrooms appeared in the London Medical and Physical Journal: a man had served his family Psilocybes that he had picked in Green Park. Later, the doctor who treated them described that the youngest of the children in this family "suffered immoderate fits of laughter".

In 1955, the Wassons were the first European Americans to attend a native mushroom ceremony in Mexico. They did not hesitate to make their experience public, publishing an article in Life on May 13, 1957. In 1956, Roger Heim identified the fungi described by the Wassons as a Psilocybe. In 1958, Albert Hofmann identified for the first time the active compounds of these mushrooms: psilocybin and psilocin.

After reading the Wasson article, Timothy Leary traveled to Mexico, curious to experiment with psilocybin mushrooms. Upon his return to Harvard, he launched the Harvard Psilocybin Project with his colleague Richard Alpert, whose goal was to make a psychological and religious study of psilocybin and other psychedelic drugs. One of their experiments caused a lot of controversy, until the two researchers were fired by Harvard in 1963. They turned to promoting the psychedelic or "trip" experience to the nascent hippie culture.

These days

All these experiments have led to an explosion in the use of these species (variety) of mushrooms worldwide and the sale of grow kits and truffles. Around the 1970s, many species (varieties) were described from parts of North America, Europe and Asia. Several books have appeared to describe the methods of growing these mushrooms. At present, the use of psilocybin mushrooms is still a common practice and some countries have made it legal and controlled given their potential medicinal properties.

Where do they grow naturally?

The number of magic mushrooms is estimated at 144 species and varieties, of which a large number (about 53 varieties) are found in Mexico. The rest is divided between Africa, Australia, Asia, the United States, and Europe. They are mostly found in subtropical and humid forests. Le type P. Semilanceata is considered the most common variety of magic mushroom in the world. You can easily grow the species of your choice using grow kit.

The effects of magic mushrooms

Hallucinogenic mushrooms are mushrooms with psychoactive effects. They can cause sensory effects (such as hallucinations) and emotional effects. For example, at low doses, they have no real dangers or harmful effects on health and can cause euphoria while preserving the lucidity of the user. In high doses, they can cause serious hallucinations and alter the perception of time and space.

Sensory effects

More often, the consumption of hallucinogenic mushrooms causes several sensory signs, including:

  • visual hallucinations

  • auditory hallucinations

  • up to emotional changes and alterations in the perception of time and space.

  • In general, these effects become apparent after 30 to 60 minutes of ingestion, sometimes up to 120 minutes.

  • Changes in visual perception vary from color enhancement and contrast, strange light phenomena, increased visual acuity, to seeing objects that are distorted, or moving.

  • Auditory hallucinations give sounds increased clarity. For example, music can suddenly take on a deep meaning. Some even experience synaesthesia, which is a visualization of color by hearing a particular sound.

Emotional effects

The "trip" depends heavily on the setting. The more pleasant the environment, the more successful the trip experience. On the other hand, if the person undertakes his "trip" in an anxious state, there is a good chance that he will feel increased anxiety.

When consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms, panic reactions and psychoses may occur, especially if the user ingests a large dose. This can have serious health implications, some of them forever.

A study conducted at Johns Hopkins University found that a dose of 20 to 30 mg/70 kg of psilocybin reinforces positive feelings such as altruism, gratitude, forgiveness, and feelings of closeness to others, especially when combined with meditation and a program to support deep spiritual practice.

Dosage of magic mushrooms

Each species, or even subtype, of hallucinogenic mushroom contains a different concentration of psilocybin and psilocin. More often, it can vary between 0.5% and 2% of the dry weight of the fungus. Beyond 5 g of dried hallucinogenic mushrooms, it is considered a high dose, with very harmful effects on health. To avoid falling into error, you can use dosing tools or opt for a grow kit that offers you the opportunity to have a small dose.

How long does the effect of magic mushrooms last?

In general, the effects due to the consumption of hallucinogenic mushrooms appear in 15 to 45 minutes and usually last 4 to 6 hours. There are other criteria that influence the duration of the effect such as the dose ingested (and its psilocybe and psilocin content), the stomach too full, the quality and variety of hallucinogenic mushrooms, the quality of maintenance of the culture kit etc.

Is it legal to have and consume magic mushrooms?

The legal status of hallucinogenic mushrooms varies around the world. In some countries, the use of hallucinogenic mushrooms is completely prohibited, and they are even on the list of drugs with high abuse potential or drugs without recognized medical use. However, they have many historical medicinal and religious uses, and they have a much lower potential for abuse compared to other drugs.

Hallucinogenic mushrooms are not regulated by UN treaties. However, many countries have some level of regulation or prohibition in place vis-à-vis them and grow kits. This has been criticized by the general public and researchers who see significant therapeutic potential.

Nations

Currently, the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, which prohibits their use, applies only to chemicals. The Commentary to the Convention on Psychotropic Substances notes, however, that plants containing psychotropic substances are not subject to international control. Among other things, only psilocin, a chemical substance, is banned, not hallucinogenic mushrooms. You can, after checking the legislation of your country, own and use a grow kit.

Cheating

Fresh hallucinogenic mushrooms are legal in Austria. You can buy a grow kit and grow your own magic mushrooms.

Netherlands

In the Netherlands, only a few species have been banned. The "truffles", much less strong, have probably not been placed on the list of prohibitions in the Netherlands. Since September 13, 2019, magic truffles are fully taxed and legalized, as well as other variants.

For your information, our business at mycotrop, based in the Netherlands, is totally 100% legal.

United Kingdom

Dried mushrooms are classified as illegal, since they are considered a preparation containing psilocybin or psilocin.

United States

The issue of hallucinogenic mushroom legislation is highly controversial in the United States. Some states consider it legal and allow its sale and those of grow kits, others prohibit it.

Portugal

Portugal has decriminalized the possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms in quantities not exceeding a ten-day supply (as well as other substances). You can use your grow kit without any problem.

India

Psilocybin is banned for sale in India. However, mushrooms containing the substance are not. You can use your grow kit without any problem.

Jamaica

Psilocybin is legal. What's more, people who want to try the effects of psilocybin legally can travel to Jamaica and purchase a vacation package with on-site doctors and therapists who can monitor participants after taking hallucinogenic mushrooms.

The risks of overdose of magic mushrooms

In general, the abuse of hallucinogenic mushrooms is not life-threatening as is the case with other drugs, however, it is important to keep in mind that poisoning is always possible. Other side effects may be reported, especially with long-term use of high doses, such as:

  • Parasympathetic signs such as nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate, muscle relaxation, increased blood pressure, excessive sweating, hypersialorrhea etc.

  • Muscle spasms

  • Intense visual and auditory hallucinations to the point of enduring physical pain or infliction on others.

  • Decreased attention or even inattention, especially to dangers

  • Increasing anxiety or even a feeling of paranoia, a feeling of imminent danger

  • Reduced or no inhibitions to hazards

  • Insomnia

  • Psychosis, especially during long-term use.

Some interesting facts about magic mushrooms

Fact 1: Magic mushrooms enhance brain connectivity.

According to a King's College study published in 2014, the psilocybin in hallucinogenic mushrooms may actually boost brain connectivity. Indeed, after performing several functional magnetic resonance imaging with 15 volunteers, the researchers noticed a change in brain activity and a connection between areas that would not normally be connected.

Fact 2: Magic mushrooms date back to the dawn of time.

Hallucinogenic mushrooms seem to have been used several years ago, especially during religious ceremonies. As mentioned earlier in the article, rock art dating back to pre-history has been found. Some hallucinogenic species appear to have been used by Mesoamerican peoples in religious divination and healing ceremonies.

Fact 3: What if the myth of Santa Claus was due to magic mushrooms?

As incredible as it may seem to you, there is a hypothesis by an anthropologist at Sierra College, Mr. John Rush, who claims that the origin of Santa Claus is actually due to the consumption of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Mr Rush states that Siberian shamans tended to bring hallucinogenic mushrooms as gifts every winter. They tended to move on reindeer, as they were their spirit animals. It might sound ridiculous to you, but even Carl Ruck, a well-known anthropologist at Boston University, said in 2012: "At first glance, you think it's ridiculous, but it's not." What if it were true?

Fact 4: Mushrooms can change people and their perceptions of the world

And we're talking about positive change! A 2011 study found that after consuming a small dose of psilocybin, people tested became more open to new experiences for at least 14 months. These people have been more open, creative and joyful. Indeed, most reported a feeling of intense joy and connection to others. However, it must be kept in mind that the researchers have made every effort to ensure that their participants do not suffer a "bad trip". They had put them in a safe room with quiet music and a relaxing environment.

Even more interesting facts about magic mushrooms

Fact 5: Fungi inhibit feelings of fear.

A 2013 study, which used mice as guinea pigs, found that animals that consumed hallucinogenic mushrooms were less likely to feel scared or when they heard a noise they had associated with painful stimulation.

This study promises to inspire more work on how mushrooms could be used to treat mental health problems in humans, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Fact 6: They create their own wind

Hallucinogenic mushrooms need to reproduce, and they do it incredibly amazingly! As with most fungi, they reproduce via spores, transported with the wind to find a safe place where their mycelium will grow. Unfortunately (or fortunately) these mushrooms live in areas where the wind does not blow (or little). To overcome this problem, some species create… their own wind! They increase the rate of water evaporation on their surface to place water vapor in the air around them, and they raise their spores at the same time. Thus, they can lift their spores up to 10 centimeters above them, and make the impossible possible!

Fact 7: There really are a lot of magic mushrooms out there

There are no less than 144 species of hallucinogenic mushrooms containing psilocybin and psilocybe. They are found in all continents, but they exist predominantly in Mexico.

Grow kits: what are they and why use them?

What's that?

Grow kits are prepared kits, with a substrate, that allow you to grow your own fresh mushrooms at home. From mycelium to fresh mature mushroom to shrooms, grow kits allow you to have your own supply of fresh mushrooms. Do not hesitate to use a grow kit if you are curious to try a controlled low-dose trip experience.

Why use it?

There are several answers to this question! First of all because it's fun: growing a plant from a substrate is very long but quite exciting. During the process, you will become familiar with terms you have never heard such as substrate, truffles, mycelium, shrooms, etc. Especially since the use of grow kit is very simple and relaxing and our manual contains all the explanations you need.

Then, if you are curious about the experience of consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms in low doses, it is always more interesting to grow them using grow kits. In general, beginners do not know where to get them from, and it is dangerous to pick them yourself, given their resemblance to poisonous mushrooms. However the use of a grow kit is very controllable and provides you with a correct dose of mushrooms.

In addition, the reasonable price of grow kits allows you to grow your own mushrooms and thus, taste this experience before embarking on larger investments in several weeks or years.

Finally, growing your own shrooms using grow kits can be a real challenge, but it allows you to open the door to a new type of experience: the psychedelic state.

How to grow your mushrooms using a grow kit and take care of them?

Before getting to the heart of the matter, do not forget to read, document and familiarize yourself with the technical terms related to the cultivation of your own mushrooms such as substrate, truffles, mycelium, shrooms, etc. It may seem complicated at first but it's very easy.

At mycotrop, our grow kits are designed with the utmost care to allow you the most yield possible. Once your grow kits are received at home, you have two choices. If you plan to use your substrate in the coming weeks, you will need to keep your grow kit in the refrigerator at a temperature of 3 to 5 °, this will allow you to keep them for 3 to 4 weeks (not years) at most. If you want to jump straight into the adventure, then soak your grow kit in water for 12 hours.

For the hardware to use, you will need the following:

  • A high-quality grow kit

  • A vaporizer

  • Clean water (tap or mineral)

  • A place lit but not directly exposed to the sun.

STEP 1

Open your grow kit at home and pour water into it until the container is completely filled. Then close your container and soak its contents for 12 hours.

STEP 2

After 12 hours, open your container, drain all excess water, and wash your lid.

STEP 3

Place your grow kit in a grow bag and spray the inner walls of the bag with water twice a day. You need to repeat this process every day until the mycelium (or the first needles) appear. Humidity is very important in this process. If you don't follow these steps very well, you could get poor quality truffles or mushrooms, with a very low dose of psilocybin.

STEP 4

Place your grow bag in a bright and relatively warm place, at a temperature between 22 and 24 ° C. Be careful not to place your bag in a place directly exposed to the sun at high temperature.

STEP 5

After the formation of the first mycelium needles, then you need to open your bag and shake it 1-3 times a day. You can continue to spray water once a day.

STEP 6

Harvest all your mushrooms, even shrooms, just before the veil under the hat starts to tear. Feel free to read more about this stage of cultivation.

STEP 7

Redo all the previous steps! One grow kit can produce up to 3 shoots. Buy more grow kits and vary your experience! Now you have fresh mushrooms!

More information

Regardless of the quality of your kit and the variety it contains, keep in mind that the growing conditions and the type of strains can influence the duration of the appearance of the first small mycelium pins. The variation is then of the order of one to 2 weeks. Temperatures below or above the given values (i.e. a temperature between 22 and 24 °) could slow down the development of your shrooms and mushrooms. Take the time to read the instructions carefully.

Be careful, when using your own grow kit, you must ensure its cleanliness. Remember to wash your hands and put on sterile gloves to avoid contamination. You can even wear a face mask.

What does science and medicine say about magic mushrooms?

Grow and use fresh magic mushrooms as medicine, in reasonable and controlled doses, at home

Several specialists have studied (and are still studying) the question of the use of magic mushrooms as medicines. Among the biggest leaders of this movement is Angermayer, who has raised $400 million in his company and has assembled several like-minded entrepreneurs to turn long-perceived psychoactive substances as dangerous drugs for depression and other mental illnesses.

He particularly followed the path of Compass Pathways, which was granted a patent on a method on the extraction of psilocybin in the laboratory. Then, he got approval from the Food and Drug Administration to start clinical trials in patients with depression resistant to other treatments.

At the Milken Institute World Conference in Los Angeles, the brilliant Angermayer presented his findings to an audience of political conquerors, industry leaders, and global financial elites, while demonstrating the enormous therapeutic potential of psilocybin and psilocybe, especially against depression, which affects no less than 300 million people worldwide.

Psilocybin can treat several mental health disorders

Many are not convinced of the use of psilocybin and psilocybe in the treatment of several mental illnesses, and rightly so, because so far, no scientific study has really come to a radical conclusion. However, we would have to consider larger clinical trials and deploy huge amounts of money to decide on the issue, not to mention all the regulatory hurdles associated with the approval of a drug on the market.

However, the problem still arises and several scientists are looking into the question, hoping to find an answer. Some experts have found that psychedelics can be very effective in treatment-resistant depression, and for post-traumatic stress disorder. Even further, a study conducted by the prestigious Johns Hopkins Institute in 2016 showed that psilocybin could help terminally ill cancer patients manage their depression and anxiety.

Finally, the future promises more facilitations specific to research on psychedelics in the treatment of mental health disorders, and future perspectives in this area.

Conclusion

After reading this article, you must be an ace when it comes to magic mushrooms and the use of grow kits. Terms like psilocybin, psilocybe, truffles, mycelim, should no longer scare you! However, you must keep in mind that some legislation in some countries is very harsh on hallucinogenic mushrooms, and rightly so, because excessive use can be a source of danger. If you plan to experience a trip, be very careful and take all the necessary precautions with regard to yourself and those around you. Remember that it's all about the dose and you often have to be very careful about it. Besides, a grow kit will give you exactly what you need.

If you like adventure and plan to undertake new initiatives, opt for the use of a grow kit to grow your own mushrooms. The transition from mycelium to mature fungus is often very satisfying because it is not at all easy. Finally, keep in mind that the prospects for magic mushrooms in terms of mental health are enormous, and that there will be a day when these little things will have their place on the market; After all, nature is well made and everything has its role to play!
