What is cannabis curing?

In a nutshell, curing is a ripening step during the cannabis cultivation process. It serves to develop the full potential of herbs in terms of THC and CBD. This also helps to prolong the standard of life of the grass and avoid rapid degradation.

Why is curing an important process?

Be careful, note that curing is not an essential step to follow to consume cannabis. According to the opinion of some growers, the process of drying after harvest is already enough to be able to smoke the grass. Curing is simply a practice that many people enjoy, given that it has many benefits to the preservation and consumption of cannabis.

As you can see, curing is used to improve the quality of your weed. To give you an example, chlorophyll, which is broken down through the process, contains magnesium. This is the reason why cannabis tastes unpleasant, which can make it difficult to consume.

In short, it is a process that is important but not mandatory. Its main objective is to offer the best experience to its consumer.

The benefits of curing

  • Slows down the aging process of cannabis

  • Prevents mold growth on buds

  • Serves to preserve terpenes (which plays an important role on its aroma and smell)

  • Maximizes the potency of cannabis’ effects

  • Generates a more delicious aroma

  • Allows cannabis to be stored for up to one year

How to achieve a good curing?

Invest in a quality product

The first step to successful curing is to get quality equipment. We must not neglect this point, which is very little mentioned despite its influence on the results. Don’t worry, it’s also not a process that requires a lot of material investment. You will simply need:

An airtight container

A glass jar can do the trick and is enough for those who do not want maximum yield; But you will have to think about keeping the jar in a dark place. For people who want to obtain a top quality result, we advise you to buy a stainless steel container. Its advantage is to better protect cannabis from light and moisture.

A humidity regulator

As the name of the product suggests, its role is to balance the moisture content in cannabis containers. We recommend the Boveda brand regulator, which is sold in disposable packs. Add the item to your cart by clicking here.

A humidity and temperature controller

It is not the most indispensable tool, but it is undeniably useful. This sensor is mainly used for the drying stage. The controller we recommend also comes from the Boveda brand. Gadget lovers will love it for its practicality; its Bluetooth functionality allows you to send data and notifications directly to your mobile phone! Add the item to your cart by clicking here.

Make a good selection of cannabis

Choosing the right tools is important, but using quality flowers is paramount! To do this, we recommend the best products on the market: Queen Seed Royal Cannabis Seeds.

Why choose royal queen seeds in particular? For a very simple reason: they are female plants. The latter have condensed heads in cannabinoids, that is to say THC and CBD. We invite the most curious to read the article on this subject on our blog.

The steps of the curing process to follow

drying stage

Hang the stems of cannabis plants so that the buds are facing the ground. The drying place must be in the dark, since the light affects and degrades THC. Make sure your reserve temperature is at 20 degrees Celsius for the first 3 days. It will then be necessary to reduce the heat of the room to 17 or 18 degrees Celsius on the remaining days. Be patient, because it will take between 10 and 20 days before the end of drying!

Remember to constantly check the humidity level for successful drying. The ideal would be to maintain a humidity of 50%, for a relatively fast process without rushing the cannabis plants. This is how chlorophyll will evaporate optimally and will not leave you with unpleasant tastes at the time of consumption.

How do I know if the drying is finished?

Try to break one of the stems of your plants in a gentle and firm way. You can proceed to the next step if the break is immediate and crunchy.

Curing stage

Cut off the heads of their stems first. Store them in a container without packing them too much. To get an idea of the recommended amount when filling, keep in mind that it takes enough space, i.e. a quarter of the container, to be able to move the buds.

It will then be necessary to keep your grass in a room at a cool temperature, between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius maximum. Remember to open your containers every day, for about 2 weeks. It is important to expose to air for 5 to 10 minutes and stir the heads from the bottom to the top daily to avoid mold.

You will notice that the smell of the buds will be reminiscent of hay or ammonia. Don’t panic! This is quite normal, since it is a situation caused by humidity. You will regain its normal smell after a few days.

When to stop curing?

The curing process varies depending on the grower. Some will say that 2 weeks is enough, while others will devote 2 years in total. In reality, it all depends on the state of your heads as well as your own satisfaction. To give you an idea, it usually takes 2 to 3 months for qualitative results.

Our additional tips and techniques for successful curing

  • In case the cannabis has dried too much, you can re-moisten it by adding one or two lettuce leaves to the jar. Just leave it for half a day to notice a difference. Do not worry! The lettuce leaf will have no influence on your weed, either in terms of taste or smell.

  • If you have a creative and gourmet spirit, we invite you to rehydrate your cannabis using slices of fruit. This will add flavor to your herb, unlike lettuce!
